Sara Rayo is the daughter of two renowned artists, painter Ómar Rayo and poet Águeda Pizarro. She specializes in communication design and art direction, and as an artist, she has exhibited her works in various galleries in New York, Miami, Quito, Cali, and Bogotá.
"We live in a three-dimensional space, and the more dimension, shadow, and volume I can give to the work, the more I feel I belong to the space we live in." – Sara Rayo.
Artist Statement:
In my most recent works, mysterious and geometric shapes emerge like large diatoms and other mysterious forms on monochromatic or colored backgrounds and surfaces. By hand-cutting and organically folding the surface, I reveal various layers or levels, the interior, the secret of ourselves. A secret space behind the surface that I hand-cut to reveal a third dimension behind the folds. The surface seems to delve into the interior of the paper, which has now become a three-dimensional sculpture. My main inspiration comes from the geometric forms in nature: diatoms, flowers, fruits, and leaves.
This latest work is striking and intriguing due to its pursuit of perfection, geometry, and form, its three-dimensionality and stillness, a mystery and reality of a vulnerable surface that has been extruded, pressed, forced, and created.
Bibiana Hernández x Sara Rayo: Working with leather was not the challenge. It was actually a delight because the material is very flexible and yields so easily under the knife. What was challenging was working with a size I'm not used to. Nevertheless, everything came together perfectly and with constant positive reinforcement from Bibiana from afar. I am honored to be able to work with such a talented designer and I trust the impeccable outcome of this collaboration. The Sara Rayo for Bibiana Hernández handbag collection is currently available for sale at www.bibianahernandez.com.
